Sensors allow smart phones, smart cars, smart factories, smart buildings, smart cities and just about every other smart technology to know what is happening. With the proper control system, either through the assistance of an operator or autonomously, the sensor inputs help achieve a desired outcome. But what is a smart sensor?
Like any modern technology book, you can eventually find the same material somewhere on the internet – if you know what you are looking for and are willing to spend the time to find it. Alternatively, the most recent, 3rd edition of Understanding Smart Sensors, even though it is over seven years old, consolidates a variety of different technologies that are still highly relevant and implemented in most of the smart products that have been introduced or are currently in development. The third edition contains some of the classic building blocks of sensing technology from the pioneering of micromachining in 1980s to signal conditioning and interfacing to digital circuitry as well as network technologies – both wired and wireless. With the addition of energy harvesting, sensor fusion and other areas including the impact of software, the 3rd edition provides a thorough background for the interested reader to pursue their desired approach to create the next generation of smart sensors or products that incorporate smart sensors.
