Review of ‘RADAR and EW Modeling In MATLAB and Simulink’

Davila Book review

Radar and EW Modeling in MATLAB and Simulink by Carlos Davila, Glenn Hopkins, Gregory Showman

Reviewed By Mark E Davis, Medavis consulting, Clinton NY

This book has a very complete coverage of both MATLAB and SIMULINK code for understanding each of the chapters. Of particular benefit are the Guides for creating GUIs for creating figures within each chapter. Furthermore, each chapter has clear figures that can be applied to the engineer’s ability for presenting advanced examples in the area of Radio Frequency (RF) sensing and operation.

There are a wide range of RF applications to provide the reader for trade off of the major capabilities in both Radar and EW systems.  The application models include antenna, propagation, clutter, transmitter and receivers, and basic signal processing. In many chapters, there are second and third level models to capture the practical consideration of hardware and algorithmic impacts on future system prediction. These models are very intuitive to integrate these applications into a system level performance analysis.

The Target Detection chapter is particularly beneficial for designing a radar capability. It details both non-coherent and coherent operation and provides the MATLAB tools to model the most important aspects of radar systems design. The understanding of receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and constant false alarm ratio (CFAR) are beneficial for measuring the critical figures of merit (FOM).

The last chapters of the book integrate MATLAB and Simulink tools for assessing engagements over time and geometry. In these sections, both the Radar and Electronic Warfare applications for a more complete understanding of the basic radar modes, enable target tracking and the impact of jamming on the radar systems. These tools approximate the more extensive concept of operation and evaluation of sensing operations, such as the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM). These mature modeling tools provide the geometry and time motion of the basic radar, classes of targets and impact of electronic warfare effects in a basic scenario.
