Problem Solving 101 with Matteo Pastorino – Innovations in Microwave Imaging Techniques

“There are many good specialized books about various aspects of microwave imaging, but Pastorino and Randazzo believed that an overview of methods and applications could stimulate readers along different directions – novel applications perhaps, or improving the technology in some manner. They cover basic concepts of microwave imaging systems and the electromagnetic characterization of materials, fundamentals of electromagnetic imaging and inverse scattering, microwave imaging in civil engineering and industrial applications, biomedical applications, subsurface prospection, security purposes, and new trends and future developments.”

At Artech House, we ask our authors what problems their books can help readers solve. In this series, we share what our authors aim to do in their writing. Read on to find out what Matteo Pastorino who, along with Andrea Randazzo wrote Microwave Imaging Methods and Applications had to say:

What are some problems your book can help readers solve?

The book is aimed at providing an overview of recent microwave imaging techniques and their application in several practical fields. The first chapters provide a description of the scattering phenomena and of the inverse scattering problem, which can be helpful for professors, researchers, and in engineering, as well as for engineers working in industries.

The aim of the other chapters is to provide a description of the most important applications of microwave imaging. Consequently, they could be of interest for design engineers and product engineers in several industries. It is worth noting that recently proposed microwave imaging techniques may not be well known, especially by practitioners. The book can help in providing a better knowledge of the applications in which such techniques can be effectively employed. Research centers can benefit from this review, too. Moreover, the book can also be useful for industries and universities that need a starting point for designing and realizing a microwave imaging measurement system.

What are the features of your book and the specific benefits a reader can expect to derive from those features?

Feature: Overview of microwave imaging methods

Benefit: It is possible to compare methods used in different applications.

Feature: Overview of various applications

Benefit: It can stimulate new use of imaging apparatuses and systems

Feature: New trends and ideas

Benefit: It can stimulate new researches both on methods and apparatuses. Moreover, new applications can be proposed.

Please name the audiences at which this book is aimed. How will this audience use your book?

  • Industrial/Non destructive testing and evaluations: As a comprehensive reference book. To develop new techniques for nondestructive testing
  • Industrial/Biomedical Applications: To develop new imaging modalities (also associated to more consolidated techniques)
  • Research Centers: To stimulate the development of new imaging systems and reconstruction procedures
  • Universities: As a reference book for courses concerning electromagnetic diagnostics
