This is the first book to cover the newly emerging field of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) radar using the multipath exploitation radar (MER) method. Traditionally, moving target indicator (MTI) radar required unfettered direct-line-of-sight (DLOS) to targets of interest for both detection and tracking when observed from a stand-off airborne radar. In an urban setting, there is significant LOS blockage due to buildings and other structures. Building on knowledge-aided (KA) techniques pioneered by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a new MER mode has been developed and successfully flight tested.
The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the NLOS MER method. Only a basic understanding of radar is assumed, along with undergraduate level knowledge of physics and statistics. Topics covered include electromagnetic propagation in an urban environment, range-Doppler MER MTI processing, environmental database design and exploitation, and multi-hypothesis tracking.
