When Artech House authors write their books, we ask them what they want their readers to get out of the project. In this series, we show you what our authors, in their own words, wish to impart upon readers. Rick Sturdivant, author of Systems Engineering of Phased Arrays, describes what his book is about:
Phased arrays have been traditionally used for radar systems. However, this has changed in recent years. They are now being used or proposed for use in internet of things (IoT) networks, high speed back haul communication, terabit per second satellite systems, 5G mobile networks, and mobile phones. As a result, there is renewed interest and investment occurring in the development of phased array components and systems. While there are existing books on phased arrays, they are focused on radar applications, only on the antennas, and/or do not consider system design issues for phased arrays.
This book fills this gap by considering systems engineering of phased arrays and addresses not only radar, but also back haul communication systems, 5G, IoT, and mobile phone applications. The main premise of the book is that a system level perspective and approach is essential for the successful development of modern phased arrays.
This book can be considered as having three main sections. Section 1 is Chapters 1 to 4 which give top level systems engineering activities such as the systems engineering process, architectures, operational environments, and concept development. Section 2 is Chapter 5 to 9 which provide information on the detailed development of phased arrays including antennas, transmit/receive modules, thermal design, analog versus digital beam forming, and digital receivers. Section 3 is on system modeling covered in Chapter 10 and advanced development activities covered in Chapter 11. The book is organized in three main sections which provide the reader with essential knowledge on the developed of systems enabled with phased arrays.
