Polarization in Electromagnetic Systems, second edition, treats the important topic of polarization at an intermediate level with emphasis on understanding all basic concepts. Mathematical formulations are presented that are useful in today’s practical problems. Unnecessary mathematics and derivations are avoided. Applications to the following areas are included: antennas, propagation, wireless communications, radar, and radiometry.
The book is useful to practicing engineers. It is organized for rapid understanding of the principles and for easily locating material needed in computations. The book is also suitable for use in the classroom, especially as a part of radio systems-oriented courseware that is intended to study the complete propagation channel.
It is an updated and expanded version of the first edition.
Electromagnetic waves are characterized by frequency, direction, intensity, and polarization. Polarization is the orientation of the electric field of an electromagnetic wave and is the topic of this book. Polarization is often not well understood by engineers, and this misunderstanding can lead to less than optimum system performance and, in some cases, even complete system failure. In addition to avoiding problems in system design with proper attention to polarization aspects, polarization can even be exploited. For example, communication capacity can be doubled using orthogonal polarizations. Also, polarization diversity is used for improving system performance (such as data rate increase in wireless communications). Polarization diversity is most commonly realized using two orthogonal polarizations at a receiver and selecting the best performing of the two received signals. Polarization diversity is covered in detail in the book. The goal of the book is to understand polarization concepts and to provide useful tools to maximize electromagnetic system performance through the best use of polarization.
