When Artech House authors write their books, we ask them what they want their readers to get out of the project. In this series, we show you what our authors, in their own words, wish to impart upon readers. Mohinder Jankiraman, author of FMCW Radar Design, describes what his book is about:
This book is a tutorial on how to design narrow band radars, for surveillance, navigation and missile seeking. It coaches the reader in FMCW theory and is followed by an expose on RF components and their applications. These components will form the basis of construction of the radar. The radar design itself is based on certain given specifications and how one can use the specifications to calculate the radar parameters, required to
fulfill those specifications. The reader is then guided through simulations on SystemVue for the RF channels. We then discuss the signal processing issues and finally radar tracking, so as t complete the system. The portion on tracking is merely introductory in nature. In the final analysis, this book is a SystemVue based design approach.
This book is intended for readers who already have a knowledge of devices and circuits for radiofrequency (RF) and FMCW radars and are ready to study the systems engineering level aspects of modern FMCW radar systems. The author provides a general overview of FMCW radar technology with their components, focusing on the analog parts of the system and their non-idealities. Based on the physical functionality of the various building blocks of a modern FMCW radar, block parameters are derived, which allows the examination of their influence on the overall system performance. The discussion is complemented by tutorial exercises based on the Keysight SystemVue® electronic system-level (ESL) design software. Based on these tutorials, the reader will gain practical experience with realistic design examples of FMCW radar systems. The tutorials
cover state-of-the-art system standards and applications and consider the characteristics of typical radar hardware components.
