At Artech House, we ask our authors what problems their books can help readers solve. In this series, we share what our authors aim to do in their writing. Read on to find out what Preetpaul Singh Devgan, who wrote Applications of Modern RF Photonics had to say:
What are some problems your book can help readers solve?
- This book will allow the reader to know what kind of RF photonic link should be used
- When to use an RF photonic solution versus an electronic one.
- How to design an RF photonic downconverter
- How to use different modulation formats for different applications
What are the features of your book and the specific benefits a reader can expect to derive from those features?
Feature: This book focuses on applications in support of an overall architecture and not just background/fundamentals.
Benefit: Most professionals in the area are interested in how RF photonic systems are used to address specific needs. The book shows how the systems are designed and operate in a practical way, not a theoretical way.
Feature: This book covers multiple applications of analog photonic systems, including: single sideband modulated links, optoelectronic oscillators, down conversion, analog to digital conversion and RF signal isolation and identification.
Benefit: No other book currently covers all of these applications in one place.
Feature: The book includes examples of integrated photonic circuits for RF signal processing.
Benefit: Integrated photonic circuits are a cutting edge development that is being advanced under the United States Manufacturing Institute on Integrated Photonics. Recently, this institute was just awarded to a consortium based in New York called AIM Photonics. It involves over $500 million over 5 years.
Please name the audiences at which this book is aimed. How will this audience use your book?
- Professional Engineers/Scientists working in RF and/or photonics: The book will provide a reference in order to see how current RF photonic systems work. It would allow them to quickly gain a basic understanding of systems. The ultimate goal is for the reader to be able to evaluate RF photonic systems for their own needs and be able to design new systems based on the knowledge gained from this book
- Academic students and faculty in physics or engineering: RF photonics is a growing field. As the field grows, more young scientists/engineers will be required to help support this work. There are few, if any, formal courses that teach this area. It is a multidisciplinary field combining both RF electronics as well as photonics. This book would introduce the reader to the basic fundamentals and how these systems work and are used. It could then be used for a course on RF photonic system design. The course would fit in with any electro-optics or photonics specialization in an electrical engineering, physics or optics curriculum.
- Device scientists developing novel photonic components: One of the most common complaints from device scientists is a lack of knowledge of how their devices are used in systems. This book would provide concrete examples of systems that require these devices to operate. They would be able to see how their device’s performance can impact the overall system. With this knowledge, they can learn what the current bottlenecks to improved systems are and what needs to be done to address these limitations
- Members of Electrical engineering photonic societies: The book can be used to promote the area of analog photonics as well as in conjunction with tutorials. Currently, the two biggest professional conferences concerning photonics, the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC) and the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO), each offer one day tutorials on the basics of RF photonics. These tutorials do not use books but rather notes from the lecturer. However, most professional attendees would like to know about the uses of RF photonics rather than just fundamental basics. This book would serve as a basis for developing a tutorial on the applications of RF photonics. It could be given in conjunction with the current tutorials offered or as a second tutorial on the specific applications.
