At Artech House, we ask our authors what problems their books can help readers solve. In this series, we share what our authors aim to do in their writing. Read on to find out what Marko Suojanen, who wrote Military Communications in the Future Battlefield had to say:
What are some problems your book can help readers solve?
- Command and control community and military communications as a specific area is informed with different types of capability planning and trade-offs regarding operations and technology development.
- Decision-makers in the military and security technology area both within technology companies and governments recognize the importance of technology forecasting and foresight in development of future capabilities and are also informed with an importance of preserving techniques (and technologies) from the past and the need for redundant solutions in addition to networked battlefield concepts.
- Interplay between different fields of technologies may result as consequences that are very hard to predict unless holistic operational analytic approach is taken seriously also in command and control considerations.
- Development of future technologies and their impact in the battlefield can be analyzed with different types of factors that mandate the success of future operations. Understanding the idea that these factors come also outside typical command and control and net-centric capability areas is important as traditionally C2 is regarded as a separate part in wargaming although it deserves a key position in the scenario-based approach. Traditional measures of C2 performance are enriched with more operational approach where situational awareness, time and protection lay the foundations to command securely.
What are the features of your book and the specific benefits a reader can expect to derive from those features?
- An understanding of the importance of technology foresight in the military communications without forgetting old ways of communications
- Is it easy to get carried out by new developments of technologies especially in the field of communications, but technology foresight brings several benefits in the form of cross-cutting, amplifying and counter-productive implications that have to be considered with operationally adequate measures that may reveal importance of various techniques and technologies from the past.
- Operational analytic scenario-based approach as a tool to consider future capabilities, requirements and alternative ways to communicate in the battlefield.
- Recognition of different affecting factors and balancing of trade-offs with respect to versatile and most probable missions.
- Physical delivery of messages using manned or unmanned systems as an alternative way of military communications.
- Operational analytic considerations raise important requirements of silent delivery in certain scenarios that is not often faced in civilian approaches. Physical delivery is considered against typical communications measures of performance that extends the discussion to unmanned and autonomous systems thereby connecting these hot topics of future technology development.
Please name the audiences at which this book is aimed. How will this audience use your book?
- Military and security officers and technology experts within defense and security areas: Command and control community and military communications as a specific area is informed with different types of capability planning and trade-offs regarding operations and technology development. The book introduces an example of scenario-based method in evaluation of different military communications alternatives that the readers can apply and develop in their endeavors.
- Technology and business development managers and government officials in defense and security areas: Decision-makers in the military and security technology area both within technology companies and governments recognize the importance of technology forecasting and foresight in development of future capabilities and are also informed with an importance of preserving techniques (and technologies) from the past and the need for redundant solutions in addition to networked battlefield concepts.
- Technology experts within long-range technology foresight: Interplay between different fields of technologies may result as consequences that are very hard to predict unless holistic operational analytic approach is taken seriously also in command and control considerations. Scenario-based approach raises important inputs for characteristics of future warfare and serves as a great tool to consider implications of cross-cutting technology developments. Technologies should be also considered from the perspectives where certain combinations of technologies are counter-productive.
- Post-graduate students and research scientists in communications and defense-related research areas: Development of future technologies and their impact in the battlefield can be analyzed with different types of factors that mandate the success of future operations. Although the book presents the material in conceptual and simple way, the concepts presented in the book encourage readers using operational analytic modeling and simulation to extend performance measures from mere signal-to-noise ratios to more elemental survival factors in the future battlefield.
