Deep Learning Based RF Target Classification: Recent Results and Technical Challenges
The focus of this lecture will be recent advances of deep learning (DL) based Radio Frequency (RF) / Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) target classification and future technical challenges. We will discuss some of the important deep learning architectures and their benefits to SAR image classification. We also present available RF databases for deep learning research. We then illustrate recent research results, technical challenges, and directions of deep learning based RF object classification. Finally, we will provide adversarial perturbation and mitigation techniques involving SAR automatic target recognition (ATR). Implementation demonstration will be provided using Google Colab/Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Bio: Dr. Uttam K. Majumder received Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Purdue University, M.S. in electrical engineering from Air Force Institute of Technology, and B.S. in computer science from the City College of New York, CUNY. Dr. Uttam K. Majumder is a senior electronics engineer at U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). His research interests include artificial intelligence / machine learning (AI/ML), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithms development for surveillance applications, radar waveforms design, and high performance computing for SAR based automatic target recognition (ATR). His dissertation research was focused on “Nearly Orthogonal, Doppler Tolerant Waveforms and Signal Processing for Multi-Mode Radar Applications” and submitted a patent for this innovation. Dr. Majumder recently published a book on “Deep Learning for Radar and Communications Automatic Target Recognition”. Dr. Majumder is a senior member of IEEE.
