What are some problems your book can help readers solve?

  • The book explains the common phenomena seen in ESM systems with many examples of how to recognize issues in the ESM data and solutions for their mitigation.
  • Techniques for visualizing ESM data and how to set up ESM testing and trials are given, including the simulation of the electromagnetic environment.
  • Detailed calculations for generating radar beam-shapes for use in simulations of pulse trains and the calculation of detection range are useful for data analysts, trials engineers and system assessors. The techniques used are not published elsewhere.
  • Multipath and ESM Antenna separation are two of the main causes of error in the measurement of Direction of Arrival (DOA) of pulses by ESM systems. These problems are described in detail so that ESM Analysts can recognize the issues and ESM equipment designers can use the techniques suggested to optimize their system performance.
  • The identification of radars by ESM systems is considered in detail with ideas presented on how to generate an effective radar library.

What are the features of your book and the specific benefits a reader can expect to derive from those features?  

  • A detailed description of the causes of DOA errors including multipath effects allows the ESM analyst to identify the reasons for poor ESM performance and to mitigate for these effects.
  • New methods for generating RF scan strategies for narrow-band receivers (proven to be effective in trials) are proposed to significantly improving Probability of Intercept (POI) for radars over conventional methods.
  • A  method of modeling a radar beamshape is useful for the simulation of pulse data to compare with data recorded during equipment  trials and for calculations of the ranges at which radars should be dectected.

  • Data Analysts – both Military and Civilian: Data Analysts will use the book to explain phenomena seen in data taken from ESM trials and find potential solutions to issues that they have observed.
  • System Assessors – Military and Government Assessors and  Industry Test and  Evaluation Engineers: ESM System Assessors will find information on how to set up ESM system trials and techniques for system assessment in the book. They will find out which aspects of system operation can be improved through better system design. They will also benefit from understanding the limitations on system performance  that are inevitable due to physics .This will allow them to manage expectations of system operators when drawing conclusions on system performance..
  • ESM Equipment Developers: The book will help ESM equipment developers to optimize the design of ESM equipment and the installation of ESM antennas. Processes for minimizing DOA errors and the construction of effective ESM libraries will be some of the benefits gained.
